A first-of-its-kind feed additive that helps reduce cows’ methane belches will be rolled out for Europe’s dairy farmers after EU countries backed a Commission proposal to allow it to be marketed, reported by the Europian Commision.
The feed additive, called 3-nitrooxypropanol, has been estimated to cut dairy cows’ methane emissions by up to 35% without reducing their milk yields, and up to 90% for beef cows. It is made by DSM, a Dutch chemicals giant that markets the compound under the name Bovaer.
In addition, the European Food Safety Authority has accepted the additive as safe, and Bovaer is already approved for use in Brazil and Chile.
Impulse previously reported that a new consultation has been launched on minimum unit pricing for alcohol in Northern Ireland.
